When is Rio Carnival?

The Brazilian Carnival is a 4 day national holiday, traditionally forty days before Easter is when Rio Carnival starts. It mostly falls in the month of February but on some occasions it is celebrated in March and it always officially starts on a Friday with major celebrations winding down on the following Tuesday. The next day on Wednesday is when you witness a mass exodus from The Rio de Janeiro Festival, so book your bus and transfers out in advance to secure your spots. The two most important Carnival Parades take place on the Sunday and Monday each year at the cities Sambadromo which is a long runway with grandstand seating on either side.
